Issues with MCP Servers

Hi Daniel, I wanted to report a few issues with MCP servers that I noticed.

  1. Authentication seems to be required much more often than with other clients. I can especially compare it with Raycast AI Chat. In Raycast, I never had to log in again to reauthenticate their HTTP MCP. For BoltAI, it is necessary quite regularly. For Notion, it is extreme. You have to log in again after 30 minutes or one hour. It seems like only the access token from the JWT is being used, and once it expires, the refresh token is not used to obtain a new one.

  2. For some MCP servers, the authentication workflow doesn’t work at all. One newer example I noticed is TickTick. https://help.ticktick.com/articles/7438129581631995904 It should work, but you simply get an authentication error after logging in and allowing the connection in the browser. Maybe that’s related to the fact that you can’t add URL-only MCPs like TickTick’s in Notion. You have to add at least one slash after the domain so the Add button becomes active and clickable.

    Hi Daniel, as I already said, there are no authentication issues anymore with Notion or any other MCP so far.

    The only remaining issue is with resources, which are unsupported.

    I’ve fixed this in v2.11. Can you confirm? cc @Adam "Kubik" Kubiczek

    I tested with all MCP servers in the catalogue and it doesn’t ask for authentication even after a day. TickTick is added as an officially supported connector.

    Sorry for the delay.

    All oauth tokens and client metadata are stored locally. So you will need to authenticate again on each device.

    Let me know if it works for you now.

      Thank you, Daniel. It seems to be working well. At least for the last four hours, the authentication hasn't expired.

    Notion authentication issue is a blocker for me since I have all project notes stored in Notion. Please, please, please fix it.

    Hi @Daniel Nguyen , it’s unfortunate to see how BoltAI is developing and how tickets get ignored. Instead, half-baked new features get shipped while obvious bugs remain unresolved. To the issues above, I can add that MCP Resources https://modelcontextprotocol.io/specification/draft/server/resources aren’t supported at all.

    I’ve supported BoltAI from the beginning. I loved the app, but to be honest, I’m close to cancelling my subscription and switching to more robust integrations. That would be unfortunate, because I truly value your work. However, I think the direction you’ve taken focuses more on expansion than on stabilization and delivering a robust product.

      Hey @Maximilian Christl, thanks for the feedback and I’m sorry to hear that you feel it that way. If you take a deeper look at the recent releases, I didn’t add any big feature. I’ve been focusing on bug fixes, security & stability. As you can see in tightening encryption algorithms (more secure for you), fixed a lot of crashes & critical bugs.

      I agree that I haven’t put more attention to MCP integration and I will focus on that next. But to be absolutely clear here, my focus has been on stability for the last few months. You may not encounter those bugs, but many others do!

      BoltAI has a lot of features, which is both a good and bad thing. Good thing is you get a lot of value out of it — even when you don’t need to use those features yet. Not so good thing is I can’t improve everything, for everyone, at once. I’ve been working like crazy the last few months, release new version like once per week.

      So what I’m asking you is patience, and feel free to bump the issue up. I get dozen of requests per day and it can be quite challenging to prioritize them. In featurebase, you can set the urgency of the issue (see screenshot). I usually pick up the urgent issues first.

      I’ve found the root cause of the bug in the original report. I will release a new version soon.

      Now to be absolutely clear here, I do not intend to support all of MCP’s features & specs. It’s huge and not many people use MCP. Even ChatGPT app only supports Tools & DCR, not MCP resources.

      So while I will continue to improve MCP integration in BoltAI, I can’t give you any promise re: timeline and level of support :)

      MCP Tools & DCR are always supported as the core feature though.
